The Great Convent Revival
On the 6th of March 1843, the foundation stone was laid for the building of the historic Convent of the Immaculate Conception, All Hallows located on McDermott Street in Ballina, County Mayo.
From the mid-1850s, the Sisters of Mercy lived at the Convent, leading lives of vocation and serving the communities of Ballina and Mayo through healthcare, education, social work, and charity.
However, due to a decline in numbers and an ageing congregation, the Convent closed in December of 2008.
Over the past two years, the community of Ballina has worked with the Sisters of Mercy to revive and reimagine the Convent, and to restore it as home for social good and charity – continuing the legacy and longtime work of the Sisters as a force for good in the community.
The revival of the Convent is an ambitious undertaking and consists of the return of the old chapel, repairs to the beautiful stained glass windows and 64 timber framed sash windows, the creation of a museum space which will tell the story of the Sisters’ work across Ireland, and new facilities and space for art, music, community development, and more.
The site sits on 4 acres in the centre of Ballina and includes the 30,000 sq foot Convent, which has suffered significant deterioration since its closure.
Your financial support will make an incredible difference, going directly to the community-led regeneration and to the source of the revival.
Your help in realising the revival of the Convent will be remembered and recognised forever – and hopefully you will be able to visit the revitalised site on your next trip to Ireland!
