Royal Irish Academy of Music – Investing in Music’s Future

The Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) is a national conservatoire which teaches 2,000 pre-college and 200 full-time degree students each year, from its premises on Westland Row in Dublin. RIAM is also the national music assessment body which examines about 35,000 music students annually, making it the quality mark for music in Ireland.

In recent years, RIAM has introduced teacher-training programs aimed at enhancing the quality of Ireland’s music teaching and is ranked in the top 50 performing arts schools in the world.

Thanks to you, the Irish American Partnership has supported the much-needed re-development of the music school campus. RIAM recently completed a major redevelopment creating a state-of-the-art campus over 65,000 square feet, establishing the Academy as a world-leading center for music education.

RIAM Director Deborah Kelleher thanked the members of the Partnership for supporting RIAM’s vision, saying:

“The campus will champion high-quality music education in Ireland and inspire generations of musicians. RIAM now has facilities matching the standard of its teaching and students.”

The development includes the concert hall, opera studio, classrooms with adjustable acoustics, a music therapy center, and an advanced library. It will allow RIAM to double its undergraduate intake to 300 and grow pre-college students from 1,500 to 3,000.

“The development project transforms the RIAM campus and opens it to the public in a far more accessible way. Accessibility and digital infrastructure of the campus will broaden the reach and profile of its students, to include those who have disabilities and those outside of Dublin.

It’s especially heartening that the Music Discovery and Therapy Facilities will be able to provide tailor-made programs for a range of people, including those on the autism spectrum.”

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD
